Virtualization is a process, not a destination. If it were a destination, would it be called vNerd Island? vGeek Paradise?

A New Beginning. A Journey Into the Flourishing Paradise of Virtualization Nirvana.
Submitted by Dennis Hartmann on Tue, 03/01/11 - 10:58am.

This is my first blog in a new technology area that I’ve been very involved with over the past year. I’ve worked my way into the promised land of virtualization in the process of achieving the VMware Certified Professional (VCP) and VMware Certified Instructor (VCI). This is my first blog out of many future blogs in which my role will be that of virtualization enthusiast. I hope you enjoy the blog, ask questions, post your own personal virtualization experiences, and feel free to collaborate.

911 is a Joke -Part 2

Dutchess County, New York E911 Response
Submitted by Dennis Hartmann on Thu, 06/03/10 - 11:47am.

Here’s a summary of the technology involved in the 911 call routing on the PSTN (public switched telephone network):

1) Call is placed to 911

2) Service provider identified 911 call and routes call to “Selective Router”

3) Selective router identifies the local PSAP (public safety answering point/911 center) to route the call to. This call routing information is based on the geographical location mapped to the ANI of the calling party by the provider.

This blog is dedicated to the Memory of Susan Meade. May she Rest in Peace. Susan was a beautiful woman who touched many around her. She will be missed.

This is part 1 of a multi-part blog roll that will investigate the 911 call handling in Dutchess County, New York. I believe 911 calls are public record. Does anyone know how to get 911 records pulled?

Submitted by Dennis Hartmann on Fri, 04/23/10 - 2:10pm.

Cisco Unified Communications Manger (CUCM) 8.0 introduces a new feature that many distributed multi-cluster call processing deployments have been waiting for…. extension mobility across clusters. And what technology feature would be worth talking about unless it had an acronym??? The new feature is referred to as Extension Mobility Cross Cluster (EMCC). CUCM 8.0 has also added support for secure Extension Mobility logins.

Cisco UC 8: Service Advertisement Framework and Call Control Discovery

In this blog series, I’ll discuss a new feature in Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) 8.0.
Submitted by Dennis Hartmann on Fri, 04/09/10 - 1:43pm.

One of the biggest cosmetic changes in the Cisco Unified Communication Manager Administration webpage (/ccmadmin) is the removal of the voicemail menu. An “Advanced Features” menu now appears where the voicemail menu used to be. The voicemail menu has now become a sub-menu under the advanced features menu. There are many new features in the Advanced Features menu including SAF, EMCC, and VPN. We’ll take a look at SAF in this blog.

Audio Codec Negotiation

Voice Class Codecs
Submitted by Dennis Hartmann on Tue, 12/15/09 - 2:43pm.

Cisco routers acting as voice gateways perform an important job in Unified Communications (UC) deployments. Digital signal processors (DSP) in voice gateways translate voice over IP real-time protocol (RTP) media to time division multiplexing (TDM) required for traditional telephony interoperability. A variety of audio codecs that have different audio quality and bandwidth requirements are used on the voice over IP (VoIP) call leg that determine call quality.

Common Device Configuration

CUCM Configuration
Submitted by Dennis Hartmann on Thu, 12/10/09 - 6:39pm.

Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) 5.0 introduced the common device configuration elements which provide a pool of configuration elements that can be assigned to multiple devices. The functionality of the configurations is similar to the operation of a device pool in CUCM. To change a configuration element among a pool of 500 devices, only the common device configuration needs to be changed.

The Common Device Configuration includes the following configuration parameters:

•Softkey Template
•User Hold MOH Audio Source
•Network Hold MOH Audio Source
•User Locale

ISR G2 Service Performance Engine (SPE)

Integrated Service Router
Submitted by Dennis Hartmann on Tue, 11/10/09 - 1:59pm.

In this blog, we will take a look at the Services Performance Engine (SPE) supported on the Cisco 3900 series router. The SPE is a modular motherboard design that allows customers to upgrade their routers core functionality without performing a forklift upgrade. The concept is very similar to the modularity that has allowed the following routers and switches to persist for close to or over a decade:

•7200 series router input/output (I/O) module
•7500 series router – route switch processor (RSP) / versatile interface processor (VIP)

Survivable Remote Site Telephony

Class of Restriction Lists
Submitted by Dennis Hartmann on Fri, 10/23/09 - 12:46pm.

In this blog, I will explain the Cisco IOS technique of applying class of service (CoS) restrictions. Previous blogs have covered calling search space (CSS) and partition configuration in Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) which will handle CoS call restrictions during normal operation of the network. Branch sites using Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express (CUCME) must rely on the Class or restriction list (CORLIST) functionality that is discussed in this blog.
