RE: Free DNS: Is it worth the cost?

Zoneedit.com is pretty cheap and starts out by giving you the first 5 domains for free.

NeuStar / UltraDNS

(* To Ernie - I use ZoneEdit myself. EveryDNS (same family as OpenDNS) does not support TXT records...and others....so this means that an SPF record isn't an option.....although I am happy with OpenDNS)
HOWEVER - ZoneEdit is authoritative DNS....this article is talking about recursive DNS....the other side of the game.)

NeuStar / UltraDNS has a history of failing authoritative services that has effected everyone from Divx (all domains in the account disappeared) to Amazon (they REALLY need to consider deploying their own nodes). Heck...ask CNET why they don't use them anymore.

Also, NeuStar/UltraDNS has offered a PAID recursive DNS service for years and it has plagued those customers with a long list of problems. That DNS is such a mystery to many sysadmins (not all!) is something that NeuStar / UltraDNS depend on to hide their problems.

This is a company that was started by tech's but taken over by sales (who HASN'T received an unwanted call from them?) and accountants. Neither of whom understand the technology or even their own services (yes - this happens at all companies...but NeuStar / UltraDNS reward this behaviour.

OpenDNS has a proven history (a good one), and their own model is NOT based on "charity", nor lying to their users about why DNS queries in London seem to be answered by a Chicago node (even though they have a "major" node in London).

Test thoroughly.
