Cisco workers mourn the passing of a manager found dead in Detroit

From Network World: A Cisco exec who was shot to death in Detroit last week is being mourned this week as a gentle family man, a "gifted techie" and a voice of reason. Ben Goldman, 42, was a director of product marketing for Cisco, where he had worked for the past 16 years. He was found shot in a notoriously dangerous and seedy part of town known as "8 Mile Road" on Aug. 19. His wallet apparently was stolen, which delayed Goldman being identified, Detroit police reported. Goldman was attending a conference at the MGM Grand Detroit, police determined.

I live in Detroit. Where Mr. Goldman was found is not such a "notoriously dangerous and seedy part of town". Trust me... there are much worse areas. But one still wouldn't want to hang out behind the Penthouse Club, which is residential, as predators would assume a white dude hanging out there with a rental car is easy pickings. The only reason I can surmise for him to be in the unfortunate predicament that he was, among other things, was because he did not valet his car for $5.

It's not "difficult to make sense of" at all! Mountain bikers are notorious for their attraction to danger, thrills, and illicit activities (such as riding where mountain biking isn't allowed). For them, accidents and injuries seem to be a badge of honor, rather than an argument for caution!

Mugged & Murdered Becasue He's A Mountain biker????

mjvande,

You are implying that this man was mugged & murdered because he was a mountain biker??!!
This is ridiculous & absurd... I can not understand your ration in your comment.

8 Mile is known for it's adult clubs

Not to mention if he was just there for the day - and was downtown at the MGM Grand. Going to 8 mile is out of the way for a day trip downtown from Detroit Metro Airport. But in his defense there are a couple unseedy clubs there.

Imaging the eulogy stating how you're a big shot at Cisco, had a nice house, wife and family but ended it all at a seedy strip club. That's rough...
