much more misuse than that
How about misusing email for information that simply does not lend itself to text-oriented communication? How many email wars have you been involved in that resulted from miscommunication via email? What we need is email-like mechanisms that support a richer range of mediums -- voice, video, text, screen recordings, etc.
Interesting Solution
Have a look at ActionBase. It changes the way of working with emails -> instead of everybody replying to emails and creating an overload, it presents a different way in which everybody works on the same email and collaborating on it.

There are many file transfer tools
My column didn't have the room to include a discussion of all of the file transfer tools out there that make large file transfer more efficient. However, included among them are solutions from companies like Accellion, Proofpoint, Tumbleweed, Proginet, Biscom and many others. I will be writing about this topic in the near future.
